Best Time to Visit the Seychelles Outer Islands

Marlene Azeez
Director of Travel
The best time to visit the Seychelles Outer Islands is during the two transition seasons, April to May and October to November, when the trade winds ease, the sea turns glassy and reef visibility is at its best. December to March is warmer, wetter and still calm on most shores; June to September is cooler, breezier and drier, with rougher water on exposed coasts. The islands are warm all year, so the real question is which month suits what you want to do there.
This guide is the timing companion to our Seychelles Outer Islands journey, which moves from the granite islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue to the remote coral islands reached by light aircraft. If you are still choosing between islands, our journal's ten best places to go in the Seychelles compares them one by one. Here the focus is the calendar: how the winds shape each month, when diving, fishing and wildlife peak, and how to match an island to the season.
TIMING
How the Seychelles Year Works
The Seychelles sits just south of the Equator in the western Indian Ocean, so the temperature barely moves. The national tourism board notes that it seldom drops below 24°C (75°F) or rises above 32°C (90°F), and that all but the remotest southern islands lie well outside the cyclone belt. What changes through the year is the wind, and with it the sea. The Seychelles Meteorological Authority's climate guide divides the year into two monsoon seasons separated by two shorter transitions.
The Northwest Monsoon: December to March
From around December to March, winds blow from the northwest. This is the warmest, most humid stretch of the year and the main rainy season, with rainfall usually peaking in January. Rain tends to come as short tropical showers, often in the early afternoon, and winds are generally light, so conditions at sea are often pleasant.
The First Transition: April and Early May
April is the monsoon reversal. Winds turn light and variable, and the meteorological authority describes sea conditions as about as pleasant as they get, ideal for fishing. It is also the hottest month, with afternoon highs that can reach 32°C. By May the southeast trades are setting in, but the sea is not yet rough, and May is typically the sunniest part of the year. For divers, snorkellers and anyone flying out to a small coral island, this is the window we recommend most often.
The Southeast Trades: June to September
From June to September, the southeast trade winds bring drier, slightly cooler weather and stronger winds, in the region of 10 to 20 knots according to the tourism board, with choppier seas, particularly on southeast-facing coasts. It is a lovely season for walking, cycling and cooler nights, but less reliable for boat days on exposed water and for sight-fishing on the flats.
The Second Transition: October and November
In October the trades weaken considerably, and the meteorological authority records it as the month with the most dry days. By November the winds drop and swing to the west, the sea is calm again, and the rains begin to build as the northwest monsoon becomes established, typically by mid to late November. This is the second sweet spot of the year.
Month by Month
January and February
Hot, humid and the wettest part of the year, with showers that usually clear quickly and generally calm seas. Good for couples who don't mind the odd downpour and anyone who wants the islands at their greenest.
March
The rains ease and the northwest monsoon weakens, so conditions at sea become more pleasant. It is a strong month for spring-break families, especially as the Easter window of 2027 falls at the end of the month, with Easter Sunday on March 28. Sooty terns start to gather over Bird Island ahead of their breeding season.
April
Light winds, calm water and excellent visibility: our first choice for diving, snorkelling and flats fishing. It is hot, so plan midday around shade and long lunches.
May
The trades arrive but the sea is still kind, and May is usually the sunniest month of the year. Ideal for couples and honeymooners.
June, July and August
Cooler, breezier and drier, with rougher seas on exposed coasts. The trade winds keep the heat manageable for children on a summer-holiday trip; on the coral islands, plan around sheltered lagoons rather than open-water boat days.
September
Still under the trades, often easing by month's end. Whale sharks are traditionally sighted off Mahé's west coast between August and November, although numbers vary greatly from year to year.
October
The trades weaken, the sea settles and the days are mostly dry. A superb month for diving and boat days, with the flats fishing and hawksbill nesting seasons under way.
November
Calm seas, light westerly winds and the first of the rains. A rewarding month for divers and anglers, and for US families travelling over Thanksgiving, which falls on November 25 in 2027.
December
Warm, humid days with afternoon showers. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the most heavily booked of the year, so secure them many months ahead.
The Best Time for What You Want to Do
Diving and Snorkelling
April, May, October and November usually bring the calmest seas and clearest water, which is why our Seychelles Outer Islands journey is timed around them. The northwest monsoon months are often calm too, while the southeast trades can make exposed reefs choppy. Turtles, rays and reef sharks are common sightings.
Fly-Fishing the Alphonse Flats
The flats of the Alphonse group, including the vast lagoon of St. François Atoll, are known among saltwater fly-fishers for bonefish, giant trevally and permit, fished catch-and-release with expert guides. Operators run their main flats season from roughly September or October through May, when the trades have eased, with a reduced programme during the windier southeast season. Angler numbers on the atoll are capped each day, so the transition months book up first.
Turtles and Giant Tortoises
Hawksbill turtles nest mainly on the granite islands and the Amirantes, typically from September to March, with the peak in November and December, according to Nature Seychelles. Unusually, Seychelles hawksbills often nest in daylight. Green turtles nest mainly on the remote outer islands and can nest in any month. Giant tortoises can be seen all year, from Curieuse off Praslin to the tortoise sanctuary on Desroches, where juvenile Aldabra tortoises are raised before release.
Seabirds
Bird Island's sooty tern colony is one of the great wildlife sights of the Indian Ocean. According to the island's own guidance, the terns gather overhead in March, land in the colony through April and May, lay their eggs in June, and the last of the young have fledged by the end of October.
Whale Sharks
The Marine Conservation Society Seychelles notes that whale sharks usually gather along Mahé's west coast between August and November, and runs its monitoring season and small eco-tours from August 1 to October 31. Sightings rise and fall from year to year, so we treat an encounter as a bonus rather than a reason to choose dates.
Who the Outer Islands Suit, and at What Age
On several of the Outer Islands a single lodge is the only place to stay. That makes them extraordinary for the right traveller and the wrong choice for anyone who wants nightlife or a choice of restaurants.
Couples and honeymooners: Any month works, but April, May, October and November give the calmest seas for boat days and private picnics. Pair two or three granite-island nights with four or five on a coral island.
Families with young children (4 to 11): Desroches is the easiest outer island for families. The resort's complimentary Kids For All Seasons programme is designed for ages 4 to 12, children can join unaccompanied from age 4, and younger children take part with a parent or carer. Shallow lagoons, bicycles with training wheels on request and a tortoise sanctuary keep days simple. Under-fours do best when the long-haul flight is broken with two nights on Mahé.
Teenagers: Snorkelling, kayaking, cycling and conservation walks keep teenagers busy. Many will want to try scuba: PADI's minimum age for its Discover Scuba Diving experience is 10, but individual dive centres set their own rules, so we confirm them for your island.
Anglers: The Alphonse group is a dedicated fly-fishing destination; book October, November, April or May for the most fishable conditions.
Multigenerational groups: Choose one island and stay put. A five-bedroom villa with its own pool and kitchen, such as Desroches' Royal Villa, works far better for grandparents and grandchildren than a string of island transfers.
Inner Islands, Outer Islands and Private Islands
The Inner Islands sit on the shallow Seychelles Bank around Mahé. Most are granite, mountainous and green, and they include Praslin, La Digue and several private islands: Fregate, North Island, Félicité and Bird Island, a coral cay on the bank's northern edge. The Outer Islands lie far beyond the bank. They are flat coral islands and atolls, including the Amirantes group with Desroches, and the Alphonse group farther out, reached only by small aircraft from Mahé. Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site more than a thousand kilometres from Mahé, is strictly protected and is generally reached only on permitted expedition voyages.
This matters for timing. The granite islands almost always have a sheltered beach somewhere; on a small, flat coral island the lagoon and reef passes are the whole story, so the transition months matter more out there.
A Sample Eight-Night Journey, Timed for the Transition Months
Days 1 and 2: Mahé
Arrive at Seychelles International Airport and keep the first day protected: a private transfer, a swim and a Creole dinner. On day two, take a private boat to Sainte Anne Marine National Park, leaving early to beat the mid-morning boats.
Days 3 and 4: Praslin and La Digue
A short flight or ferry to Praslin, then an early private walk in the Vallée de Mai, the UNESCO-listed palm forest where the coco de mer grows wild. The next day, cross to La Digue and cycle to Anse Source d'Argent, timed for low tide and soft light. Families can add a private boat to Curieuse to meet the giant tortoises.
Days 5 to 8: An Outer Island
Fly from Mahé to a coral island for four nights. Days follow the tide: a morning snorkel or dive, an afternoon cycle, a turtle walk with the conservation team, and sunsets on an empty beach.
Day 9: Departure
Fly back to Mahé in the morning to connect with your international flight. If the timings do not line up, add a final night on Mahé rather than risk a tight connection. For a private arrival or departure, ask us about Haute Jets.
ACCOMMODATION
Where to Stay, Season by Season
Mahé
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles is one of the most reliable choices for travellers who care about views, villa privacy and polished service, and it suits a first or last night as well as a longer stay. Banyan Tree Seychelles suits couples who want a more romantic, cocooned atmosphere. Families who want more space often prefer a staffed private villa near the sheltered bay at Anse Royale, which we arrange with a chef and a driver.
Praslin
Constance Lemuria is our first choice on Praslin for space, consistent service and privacy. For longer stays or larger families, a staffed villa on the island can be the better option.
Desroches Island
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island is the only resort on the island, a 35-minute scheduled flight from Mahé on a private runway beside the resort. It is our first recommendation for families and for couples who want a remote island with full resort services: private villas, complimentary bicycles, a marine biologist who leads turtle walks, a tortoise sanctuary and a doctor on call at the island clinic. It works in every season; in the southeast trades we plan days around the sheltered side of the island.
The Alphonse Group
The Alphonse group has a single small lodge built around fly-fishing, diving and the St. François lagoon. Space is very limited and is confirmed through relationships for your dates; we place anglers and adventurous couples there in the transition months.
Private Islands of the Inner Seychelles
For travellers who want a private island without the long flight, the inner bank has several of the most exclusive stays in the Indian Ocean. Fregate Island combines privacy with a celebrated conservation story, including more than 3,500 Aldabra giant tortoises; our guide to Fregate Island covers it in depth. North Island is the most private of all, chosen when discretion is the principal brief. Six Senses Zil Pasyon on Félicité suits wellness-led couples, and Bird Island is a simple, nature-first lodge for birders, best between April and October, when the sooty terns are in residence.
INSIDER INTELLIGENCE
When to Book
For the transition months, the Christmas and New Year weeks and Easter, we suggest booking nine to twelve months ahead, because the outer islands have very few rooms and the light aircraft very few seats. Otherwise, four to six months is often enough. Secure the island flights before you finalise international tickets.
HAUTE INTEL — Pack for the small plane: Island flights carry strict luggage limits. Desroches allows 30 kg (66 lb) in total per paying passenger, and soft bags make every transfer easier.
HAUTE INTEL — Holiday flights double up: Desroches' scheduled flight runs daily, with a second daily service over the peak Christmas–New Year and Easter windows (December 21, 2026 to January 10, 2027, and March 22 to April 3, 2027). Helicopters cannot fly to the island, so the flight is the only way in.
HAUTE INTEL — Plan to disconnect: There is no mobile network on Desroches; calls run on Wi-Fi or a landline. Tell colleagues before you go, and enjoy it.
The Seychelles is warm every day of the year. What you are really choosing is the sea, and in April, May, October and November it is at its kindest.

Best Time to Visit the Seychelles Outer Islands — Frequently Asked Questions
April to May and October to November are best. The trade winds ease between seasons, seas are calm and visibility is at its peak, which suits diving, snorkelling, fishing and light-aircraft flights. Our Seychelles Outer Islands journey is timed around these months.
The main rainy season runs with the northwest monsoon from about December to March, usually peaking in January. Rain tends to fall as short tropical showers, so many days are still sunny, and the sea is often calm.
Yes, for the right trip. The southeast trades bring drier, cooler and breezier weather, which is pleasant for walking and cycling, but seas are rougher on exposed coasts, so boat days, open-water diving and flats fishing are less reliable.
Desroches is the easiest outer island for families: its Kids For All Seasons programme is designed for ages 4 to 12, and the island has shallow lagoons, bicycles and a tortoise sanctuary. Break the long-haul flight with two nights on Mahé, especially with young children.
Nine to twelve months ahead for April, May, October, November, Christmas, New Year and Easter, as rooms and light-aircraft seats are very limited. Four to six months is often enough otherwise. Plan your journey and we will confirm what is realistic for your dates.
