IDEAL FOR

Discerning travelers seeking an extraordinary experience

A bespoke 6 nights journey through Carmel-by-the-Sea · Point Lobos · 17-Mile Drive · Bixby Creek Bridge · Post Ranch Inn · Alila Ventana Big Sur · McWay Falls · Hearst Castle · Piedras Blancas — designed entirely around your preferences, pace, and vision of extraordinary. Every detail is curated by advisors who know this destination from the inside.

Big Sur & the California Coast is HauteBlack’s six-night inquiry journey along the most famous coastline in America: two nights in Carmel-by-the-Sea with Point Lobos and 17-Mile Drive, Highway 1 across Bixby Creek Bridge, four nights split between Post Ranch Inn and Alila Ventana Big Sur, McWay Falls at golden hour, and a final day south to Hearst Castle and the elephant seals of Piedras Blancas.

HauteBlack designs it as one journey with one advisor holding every flight, driver, road check, room and table.

Why visit Big Sur? Roughly 90 miles of coast south of Carmel where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the Pacific, with redwood canyons, waterfalls, sea otters and very few rooms.

Is Highway 1 open? Yes. The full road between Carmel and Cambria reopened on January 14, 2026, and the fire-related closure from summer 2026 was lifted in early October. Work zones and storm closures still happen, so conditions are checked before every drive.

Is Big Sur good for families? The two cliff-top stays on this journey are designed for adults, with two guests per room. Families should ask their advisor about other options on the coast.

When is the best time to go? September and October for the clearest days; spring for wildflowers; winter for whales and quiet, with flexible days for weather.

How do you get there? Monterey Regional Airport is the closest airport to Carmel and Big Sur; San Luis Obispo serves the southern end. Private flights can be arranged through Haute Jets.

Do I need a membership? No. Non-members are welcome. An advisor responds within 24 hours when you plan your journey.

Chapter 01

Chapter 01 — Why Big Sur and the California Coast

Why plan a luxury trip to Big Sur? Because no other stretch of the American coast feels this wild this close to comfort. South of Carmel, Highway 1 runs for roughly 90 miles along a coast where the Santa Lucia Mountains fall almost straight into the Pacific, with redwood canyons on one side and open ocean on the other. There are no big towns, very few rooms, and long stretches with no phone signal. That is the point, and also the challenge: the best cliff-top rooms are limited, the road can change with the weather, and the drive is too beautiful to rush. Big Sur & the California Coast is HauteBlack’s six-night inquiry journey that solves that, moving from Carmel to the cliffs of Big Sur and south to San Simeon, with drivers, tables and road checks arranged before you land.

Chapter 02

Chapter 02 — Carmel, Point Lobos and 17-Mile Drive

Where should a Big Sur trip begin? In Carmel-by-the-Sea, the small storybook town at the northern gate of the coast. We spend the first two nights here so you arrive rested rather than driving straight onto cliff roads. Mornings belong to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of town, where cypress groves, hidden coves and sea otters reward an early, quiet walk. A private driver takes you along 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach to the Lone Cypress, and an afternoon in Carmel Valley adds tasting rooms and long lunches inland, where the fog usually burns off first. Wine lovers can pair the coast with our Napa Valley guide for a longer California journey.

Chapter 03

Chapter 03 — Highway 1 and Bixby Creek Bridge

Is Highway 1 open through Big Sur? Yes. The full road between Carmel and Cambria reopened on January 14, 2026, after the Regent’s Slide repairs, and the fire-related closure from the summer of 2026 was lifted in early October. Caltrans still runs work zones, one-way traffic controls and occasional overnight closures, especially after storms, so your advisor and driver check conditions the day before and the morning of every drive. The road itself is the experience: Bixby Creek Bridge, the 1932 concrete arch over a deep canyon, the lighthouse on its volcanic rock at Point Sur, and turnout after turnout where the coast opens up. With a driver at the wheel, everyone in the car gets to look.

Chapter 04

Chapter 04 — Post Ranch Inn: Life on the Ridge

Where should you stay in Big Sur? For many couples the answer is Post Ranch Inn, already featured in our guides to the best luxury resorts in the USA and the best nature vacations in the USA. Its 40 rooms, including Cliff Houses, Ocean Houses and Tree Houses, sit along a ridge 1,200 feet above the Pacific, each with a wood-burning fireplace and no television, so the view does the entertaining. Dinner at Sierra Mar, the inn’s glass-walled restaurant on the cliff edge, is the evening most guests remember. Post Ranch is designed for adults: rooms hold two guests and the minimum age to check in is 18. Two nights here give time for a guided hike, a long spa morning and sunset from your own terrace.

Chapter 05

Chapter 05 — Alila Ventana Big Sur: Redwoods and Meadows

Is there a second great stay in Big Sur? Yes. Alila Ventana Big Sur, highlighted in our picks of the best places in the US to visit in December and the best anniversary trips in the US, spreads its 54 suites across 160 acres of redwood canyon and meadow above the ocean. Where Post Ranch is about the ridge and the horizon, Ventana is about the forest, the quiet paths and the pools, and it is likewise tailored to adults, with rooms limited to two guests. Splitting four Big Sur nights between the two gives you both moods of the coast. Your advisor chooses the room category for the view and the season, and confirms inclusions and any partner benefits before booking.

Chapter 06

Chapter 06 — McWay Falls and the Big Sur State Parks

What should you see in Big Sur besides the road? McWay Falls first: an 80-foot waterfall in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park that drops onto a beach you cannot walk on, seen from a short overlook trail, best in late afternoon light. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, with its redwood groves along the Big Sur River, reopened on October 16, 2026, after the summer fires, though some trails stay closed while crews assess damage. Burned slopes can bring rockfall and debris flows after heavy rain, so a local naturalist guide matters more than ever: they know which trails are open, which beaches are safe at which tide, and where the condors and sea otters are likely to be. Your advisor holds that local knowledge so no day is wasted at a closed gate.

Chapter 07

Chapter 07 — South to Hearst Castle and Piedras Blancas

Is it worth driving south of Big Sur? Yes, for one long, unhurried day. South of the cliffs, the road flattens toward San Simeon, where Hearst Castle, William Randolph Hearst’s hilltop estate, is visited by guided tour and is best booked ahead. Just north of it, the elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas is one of the great free wildlife sights in California: the beaches fill with pups from late December through February, and seals of different ages haul out on the beaches through the year. Offshore, gray whales pass the coast on their winter migration south and again heading north in spring. We end the journey with a driver to San Luis Obispo or a private flight home, so there is no long drive back up the coast.

Chapter 08

Chapter 08 — When to Go, and How HauteBlack Arranges It

When is the best time to visit Big Sur? September and October often bring the clearest, warmest days on the coast. Spring brings wildflowers and green hills, while June to August mornings are often wrapped in fog that lifts by afternoon. Winter is quiet and moody, with whales offshore and fires in the room, but storms can bring temporary closures on Highway 1, so we build in flexible days. The best cliff-top rooms are few and book early for holidays and weekends. Your advisor holds every moving part: flights or a private aircraft into Monterey Regional Airport (arranged through Haute Jets), drivers, road checks, room choices, guides, Hearst Castle tours and dinners. Comparing American journeys? See Utah Canyon Country or Hawaii Island-Hopping. Rooms, guides and availability are confirmed for your dates before anything is booked. Start when you plan your journey; an advisor responds within 24 hours, and no membership is required.
