IDEAL FOR

Discerning travelers seeking an extraordinary experience

A bespoke 10–14 nights journey through Bangkok · Chiang Mai · Chiang Rai · The Golden Triangle · Phang Nga Bay · Krabi · The Phi Phi Islands · Koh Samui — designed entirely around your preferences, pace, and vision of extraordinary. Every detail is curated by advisors who know this destination from the inside.

Thailand Islands & Chiang Mai is HauteBlack’s inquiry journey to the two sides of Thailand in its cool, dry season: Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River, the temples, mountains and Lanna culture of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands, or the calmer bays of Koh Samui.

HauteBlack designs it as ten to fourteen nights with few moves and long stays, private guides and boats, ethical elephant visits with no riding, and domestic or private flights between regions, with one advisor holding every flight, boat and guide.

When is the best time to go? November to March is the cool, dry season in the north and the calm season on the Andaman coast; Koh Samui is usually best from about January. The lantern festivals usually fall in November, and the Christmas and New Year weeks are best held many months ahead.

How do you get there? Fly to Bangkok with one connection, then continue on short domestic flights. US passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 30 days and must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival. Private flights can be arranged through Haute Jets.

Do I need a membership? No. Non-members are welcome. An advisor responds within 24 hours when you plan your journey.

The Journey

Your Itinerary

Chapter 01

Chapter 01 — Why the North and the Islands Together

Why pair Chiang Mai with the Thai islands? Because together they show the two sides of Thailand: the mountains, temples and Lanna culture of the north, and the limestone islands and warm seas of the south. From November to March, while North America is in winter, northern Thailand has its cool, dry season and the Andaman coast is at its calmest, so both halves are at their best at the same time. Thailand Islands & Chiang Mai is HauteBlack’s ten-to-fourteen-night inquiry journey for that pairing: a short stay in Bangkok, several nights in the north, and a long, slow finish by the sea, with private guides and domestic or private flights so the distances never become the story.

Chapter 02

Chapter 02 — Bangkok on the River

How long should you spend in Bangkok? Two nights is enough for most travelers on this journey, ideally on or near the Chao Phraya River, where boats are the easiest way to move between the sights. A private guide takes you through the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, home of the Emerald Buddha, then to Wat Pho, known for its reclining Buddha of about 46 meters, and across the river to Wat Arun at sunset. Temples and the Grand Palace require covered shoulders and knees, which your advisor flags in advance. Evenings are for Bangkok’s food, from street-food tastings with a guide to the city’s acclaimed restaurants, booked for your dates.

Chapter 03

Chapter 03 — Chiang Mai and the Lanna North

What is Chiang Mai known for? Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 by King Mangrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, and its old city, still ringed by a moat and the remains of its walls, holds more than a hundred temples. Above the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits on its mountain at the top of a long, naga-lined staircase of more than 300 steps, with views back over the valley. Days in the north move at a gentler pace: a private cooking class, a morning with craftspeople in silver, lacquer and paper, or a drive into the hills for tea and coffee country. Northern food is its own cuisine; khao soi, a curried noodle soup, is the dish to try first.

Chapter 04

Chapter 04 — Lanterns in November: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong

When is the Chiang Mai lantern festival? Yi Peng, the northern festival of sky lanterns, is held in Chiang Mai at the same time as Loy Krathong, when people across Thailand float small decorated offerings on rivers and lakes. Both follow the full moon of the twelfth month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November, so the dates change each year. The old city is lit with lanterns for several nights. Large lantern releases are now held at organized events, and the city sets rules each year on where and when lanterns may be released; your advisor confirms the dates and arranges a calm, well-placed way to take part.

Chapter 05

Chapter 05 — Elephants, Ethically

Is it ethical to see elephants in Thailand? It can be, if you choose carefully. HauteBlack arranges elephant time only with sanctuaries that let the animals roam and that do not offer riding, painting or performances; you watch, walk alongside and learn from the mahouts and caretakers rather than ride. Several such sanctuaries operate in the hills around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Places are limited, so visits are booked well ahead, and your advisor confirms each sanctuary’s current practices before recommending it.

Chapter 06

Chapter 06 — Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle

Is Chiang Rai worth visiting? Yes, for a night or two, or as a long day from Chiang Mai. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is a gleaming contemporary temple created by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, and the Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, is a short drive away. North of the city is the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers, best seen from a private boat on the Mekong. The hills around Chiang Rai are also tea country, and the drive itself is part of the experience.

Chapter 07

Chapter 07 — Phang Nga Bay, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands

What are the best islands in Thailand for a luxury trip? On the Andaman Sea, the classic base is Phuket or the coast around Krabi, with private boats out to the islands. Phang Nga Bay is famous for its sheer limestone karsts rising from emerald water, including Ko Tapu, the needle of rock known as James Bond Island after the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun; sea caves and hidden lagoons are explored by canoe. Off Krabi, Railay is reached only by boat. The Phi Phi Islands are best seen early, on a private boat, before the day-trip crowds; Maya Bay reopened in 2022 under visitor limits after a long closure to let its coral recover, and swimming in the bay itself is not allowed. For divers, the Similan Islands National Park is open only part of the year, generally from mid-October to mid-May.

Chapter 08

Chapter 08 — Koh Samui and the Gulf of Thailand

Should you choose the Andaman Sea or Koh Samui? It depends on your dates. The Andaman coast is at its calmest from about November to April. Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, follows a different pattern: its rainiest months are usually October to December, and it is often at its best from January through the spring and summer. Samui suits families and couples who want a soft, easy island with hillside villas and calm bays, and Ang Thong National Marine Park, an archipelago of more than forty islands, is a day out by private boat for kayaking, snorkeling and viewpoints. Your advisor recommends the coast that matches your travel window.

Chapter 09

Chapter 09 — When to Go and How Many Nights

When is the best time to visit Thailand? November to March is the cool, dry season in the north and the calm season on the Andaman coast, which makes it the best window for combining Chiang Mai with the islands; November adds the lantern festivals. The Christmas and New Year weeks are the most in-demand of the year, so the best guides, boats and accommodation are committed many months ahead; see how far ahead to book a luxury trip. How many days do you need? Ten nights covers two in Bangkok, three or four in the north and four or five by the sea; twelve to fourteen nights adds Chiang Rai or a second island stay. Is Thailand good for families? Yes. With calm seas, gentle snorkeling, cooking classes and ethical elephant visits, it suits families with children of almost any age.

Chapter 10

Chapter 10 — Getting There and How HauteBlack Arranges It

How do you get to Thailand from the United States? Most travelers fly into Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) with one connection through an Asian or Middle Eastern hub such as Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Doha or Dubai, then continue on short domestic flights to Chiang Mai (CNX), Chiang Rai (CEI), Phuket (HKT), Krabi (KBV) or Koh Samui (USM). Since September 15, 2026, US passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days, and every traveler must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival; your advisor confirms current entry rules for everyone in your party. For the most seamless long-haul and regional legs, private flights can be arranged through Haute Jets. Accommodation is shortlisted and confirmed for your dates before anything is booked; we never quote rates or availability until they are confirmed in writing. Continuing in the region?
