IDEAL FOR

Discerning travelers seeking an extraordinary experience

A bespoke 8–10 nights journey through Tokyo · Shinkansen · Kyoto, Japan — designed entirely around your preferences, pace, and vision of extraordinary. Every detail is curated by advisors who know this destination from the inside.

Kyoto & Tokyo Twin Cities is Japan's essential pairing, designed as one journey: Tokyo for the country's energy, design, and tables, the Shinkansen west, and Kyoto for temples, gardens, and craft, with time left over for Nara or Uji.

HauteBlack designs this as an eight-to-ten-night city journey: four nights in Tokyo at Aman Tokyo or The Peninsula Tokyo, about two and a quarter hours on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and four to five nights in Kyoto at Aman Kyoto. This is not a bullet-train checklist. It is one advisor shaping the pace so temple mornings happen before the crowds, bags travel ahead of you, and the counters worth crossing a city for are held before you land.

Rooms are confirmed for your dates through relationships. For a slower, ryokan-led Japan, see /experiences/japan-cultural-immersion; for a Tokyo hotel week, see /experiences/tokyo. Then tell us your dates and party size at /plan-my-journey (https://www.hauteblack.com/plan-my-journey).

How many days do you need for Kyoto and Tokyo? Eight to ten nights allows four nights in Tokyo and four to five in Kyoto, with one day trip to Nara or Uji, without rushing.

How long is the train from Tokyo to Kyoto? The fastest Nozomi Shinkansen takes about two hours and fifteen minutes from Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station.

When is the best time to visit? Late March to early April for cherry blossom and mid-November to early December for autumn colour are the most beautiful and most booked; May, October, and winter are calmer.

Do I need a membership? No. Non-members are welcome. An advisor responds within 24 hours.

Chapter 01

Chapter 01 — Why Kyoto & Tokyo Together

Why pair Kyoto and Tokyo? Because each explains the other. Tokyo is Japan now: a city of fourteen million that runs on precision, where the best meal of the trip may be at an eight-seat counter in a basement in Ginza. Kyoto was the imperial capital for more than a thousand years and still holds much of the country's temple, garden, and craft heritage. Kyoto & Tokyo Twin Cities is HauteBlack's eight-to-ten-night journey built on that contrast: four nights in Tokyo, the Shinkansen west, and four or five nights in Kyoto, paced so neither city is rushed. One advisor confirms every room, train seat, guide, and table for your dates.

Chapter 02

Chapter 02 — Tokyo: The City at Full Speed

Most journeys land at Haneda (HND), the closer of Tokyo's two airports, or Narita (NRT); a private driver meets you at arrivals, or inquire about Haute Jets for a private arrival. The base sets the mood of the week: Aman Tokyo on the upper floors of Otemachi Tower for stillness, or The Peninsula Tokyo at the edge of the Imperial Palace gardens for heritage service and an easy walk to Ginza. Days are shaped with a private guide: Asakusa and Senso-ji before the crowds, the old wooden lanes of Yanaka, the Nezu Museum garden in Aoyama, Ginza's galleries and department-store food halls, and the Tsukiji Outer Market for breakfast. Evenings belong to the counters — sushi, tempura, yakitori — where seats are held through relationships rather than open booking screens. For a full Tokyo hotel week, see /experiences/tokyo.

Chapter 03

Chapter 03 — The Shinkansen West

How do you get from Tokyo to Kyoto? The Tokaido Shinkansen's fastest Nozomi trains make the run from Tokyo Station to Kyoto Station in about two hours and fifteen minutes, and for most travelers they beat flying door to door. Your advisor reserves Green Car seats on the right-hand side for a chance at Mount Fuji on a clear day, and arranges luggage forwarding so your bags arrive at the Kyoto hotel separately — large suitcases otherwise need a special oversized-baggage reservation on this line. A private driver meets you at Kyoto Station, so the city opens with a garden rather than a taxi queue.

Chapter 04

Chapter 04 — Kyoto: Temples Before the Crowds

Four or five nights at Aman Kyoto place you in a secret forest garden at the foot of Hidari Daimonji in the northern Takagamine district, within walking distance of Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. From there Kyoto is best taken early. Fushimi Inari's torii paths are open around the clock and quiet at dawn; Arashiyama's bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji are calmest at opening; Kiyomizu-dera and the stone lanes of Higashiyama reward a morning start. Afternoons slow down: the Philosopher's Path toward Nanzen-ji, a private tea ceremony with a tea master, a craft visit with a textile or ceramics studio, and the Nishiki Market lanes. Evenings bring a guided walk through Gion, where visitors are asked to respect private lanes and never photograph geiko or maiko without permission, and kaiseki dinners where the menu follows the month.

Chapter 05

Chapter 05 — Beyond the City: Nara and Uji

Two short trips from Kyoto add depth without another hotel move. Nara, under an hour away, holds Todai-ji's Great Buddha and the deer of Nara Park, and a private guide helps you reach the temples ahead of the tour groups. Uji, south of Kyoto, is the historic home of Japanese green tea and of Byodo-in, the Phoenix Hall pictured on the ten-yen coin; a matcha tasting with a tea-growing family makes a gentle half day. Travelers who want one night in a traditional inn can add a ryokan or a private machiya townhouse stay; for a journey built entirely around ryokan and onsen, see /experiences/japan-cultural-immersion.

Chapter 06

Chapter 06 — When to Go

When is the best time to visit Kyoto and Tokyo? Cherry blossom usually reaches both cities in late March to early April, and Kyoto's autumn colour peaks from mid-November into early December; these are the most beautiful and most booked weeks of the year. May and October are mild and slightly calmer. December to February is cold, clear, and the quietest time for Kyoto's temples. June and July bring the rainy season, and July and August are hot and humid. Golden Week in late April and early May, and the Obon holiday in mid-August, are peak domestic travel periods. The finest rooms and counters in spring and autumn book months ahead, so your advisor will tell you honestly what your dates can still deliver.

Your dedicated travel advisor will reshape every element — accommodations, pacing, dining, private guides, and experiences — entirely around your preferences, travel style, and what you want to remember. Nothing is off the shelf.

For peak-season travel and premium properties — particularly safari lodges like Singita Ebony Lodge or Delaire Graff Estate — we recommend booking 6 to 12 months in advance.
