Every detail is curated by advisors who know this destination from the inside.
Antarctica by Expedition Yacht is HauteBlack’s inquiry journey to the Antarctic Peninsula: a soft landing in Buenos Aires, embarkation in Ushuaia, the Drake Passage, and Zodiac days among ice, penguins and whale water aboard a purpose-built expedition yacht.
HauteBlack designs it as ten to fourteen nights: pre-voyage nights in Buenos Aires, the crossing, Peninsula and South Shetland landings set by ice and weather, and one advisor holding every flight, cabin and polar formality. Ships already referenced on our site include Seabourn Venture and Scenic Eclipse; operators such as Abercrombie & Kent and Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic shape the expedition program.
When is the best time to visit Antarctica? November through March. December and January bring peak daylight and demand; November suits early ice and chicks; February and March favour whales and quieter decks. Hold peak weeks 12 to 18 months ahead.
How do you get there? Fly to Buenos Aires, continue to Ushuaia, and board for the Drake Passage. Private flights can be arranged through Haute Jets.
Is it good for families? Yes for teenagers and sturdy older children when the ship’s minimum age and Zodiac pace fit; policies are confirmed before you deposit.
Do I need a membership? No. Non-members are welcome. An advisor responds within 24 hours when you plan your journey.

The Journey
Your Itinerary
Chapter 01
Chapter 01 — Why Antarctica by Expedition Yacht
Why go to Antarctica by expedition yacht? Because the continent has no hotels, no roads, and no fixed itinerary that ice and weather will honour. The luxury is a purpose-built vessel, an expedition team that reads the day as it unfolds, and Zodiacs that put you ashore when conditions allow — not a schedule forced against the sea. Antarctica by Expedition Yacht is HauteBlack’s ten-to-fourteen-night inquiry journey for that version: a soft landing in Buenos Aires, embarkation in Ushuaia, the Drake Passage, and days among the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. For how this sits among other once-in-a-lifetime routes, see our tours of a lifetime.
Chapter 02
Chapter 02 — Choosing the Ship
Which expedition ship should you book for Antarctica? Match the vessel to how you want to experience the ice. Seabourn Venture and Scenic Eclipse are already named among our polar foundations: stronger onboard comfort, refined dining, and, where fitted, tools such as helicopters or submersibles that open another angle on the ice. Smaller expedition yachts trade some amenity depth for nimbler landings and a quieter social mood. Operators such as Abercrombie & Kent and Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic shape the naturalist program and the daily activity menu. Your advisor shortlists ships and cabin categories for your dates, party, and appetite for Zodiac time — never rates or availability until they are confirmed in writing.
Chapter 03
Chapter 03 — Buenos Aires and Ushuaia
How do you get to Antarctica? Almost every Peninsula voyage begins with a night or two in Buenos Aires, then a domestic flight south to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, on the Beagle Channel. That soft landing matters: bags are checked for biosecurity, expedition jackets are fitted, and you board rested rather than rushing from an international arrival straight onto the pier. Ushuaia is where the voyage becomes real — the mountains behind the harbour, the pilot boarding in the channel, and the first open water of the Drake ahead. Private flights into Argentina can be arranged through Haute Jets.
Chapter 04
Chapter 04 — The Drake Passage
What is the Drake Passage like? It is the stretch of open Southern Ocean between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, typically two days each way, and it sets the tone of the journey. Some crossings are gentle; others are lively. A purpose-built expedition yacht, good stabilisation, thoughtful cabin placement, and a doctor on board are what make the difference — not a promise of flat seas. Your advisor asks about motion sensitivity early and helps choose cabin location and sailing style accordingly. The Drake is not an inconvenience to minimise; it is the threshold that makes the Peninsula feel earned.
Chapter 05
Chapter 05 — The Antarctic Peninsula and the Shetlands
What will you see in Antarctica? On a classic Peninsula itinerary: Zodiac landings among gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap penguin colonies; glacier fronts calving into still water; leopard seals and crabeater seals on ice floes; humpback and minke whales later in the season; and channels such as the Lemaire where the mountains close in on both sides. The South Shetland Islands — including places like Deception Island’s flooded caldera — often open the trip. Every landing is provisional. The best expedition leaders replace a risky shore visit with a sheltered wildlife cruise rather than force the day. That discipline is the luxury.
Chapter 06
Chapter 06 — When to Go
When is the best time to visit Antarctica? The expedition season runs from November through March, the Antarctic summer. November brings first ice, longer days and early penguin courtship; December and January are peak daylight, chicks on the beaches and the highest demand; February and March bring more whale activity and often quieter decks as the season winds down. Peak departures, especially mid-December through mid-February, should be held 12 to 18 months ahead. Shoulder weeks can be kinder on demand while still delivering the ice. Your advisor matches the month to what you most want to see — chicks, whales, photography light — rather than to whichever departure still has space.
Chapter 07
Chapter 07 — How Many Nights, and Who It Suits
How many days do you need in Antarctica? Most Peninsula voyages run roughly ten to twelve days door to door including Buenos Aires and the Drake; fourteen nights allows a longer Peninsula loop, a quieter cabin category, or recovery time at either end. Is Antarctica good for families? Yes for teenagers and sturdy older children who can manage Zodiac steps and cold-weather layers; many ships set minimum ages, so we confirm the policy before you deposit. For families comparing expedition styles, Lindblad’s educational programs are covered in our family adventure vacations. Couples come for the silence and the photography; multigenerational groups for a shared threshold experience. Polar travelers often pair the ice with Patagonia on the same South America routing.
Chapter 08
Chapter 08 — Formalities, IAATO, and How HauteBlack Arranges It
What permits and rules apply? Antarctic tourism operates under the Antarctic Treaty system and IAATO guidelines: biosecurity checks, minimum wildlife distances, landing-site caps, and no souvenirs from the ice. Ships carry the permits; guests follow the expedition team’s briefings. There are no hotels ashore — the yacht is the address. Your advisor holds every moving part: international and domestic flights, the ship and cabin, polar clothing guidance, pre- and post-voyage nights in Buenos Aires, and any Patagonia or Atlantic extension. Comparing other expedition water? See Galápagos Private Expedition or our Svalbard polar bear guide. Ships, cabins and availability are confirmed for your dates before anything is booked. Start when you plan your journey; an advisor responds within 24 hours, and no membership is required.
