The Great Migration (July–October)

The most famous wildlife event on earth. 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Masai Mara — crossing the crocodile-filled Mara River in dramatic scenes that define safari photography. Peak crossings: August–September.

Dry Season Game Viewing (June–October)

The long dry season concentrates wildlife around water sources making game viewing exceptional throughout Kenya — not just in the Mara. Amboseli, Samburu, and Laikipia are outstanding in these months.

Calving Season (January–March)

The Serengeti calving season spills into southern Kenya. Newborn wildlife, predator activity at its most intense, fewer tourists, and lower rates. A seriously underrated time to visit.

Short Rains (November–December)

Brief afternoon showers, lush green landscapes, excellent bird watching, and very competitive rates. The Mara is quiet and beautiful.

Month by Month

January–March — Calving, fewer crowds, competitive rates

April–May — Long rains, lowest rates, dramatic skies

June — Dry season begins, excellent game viewing

July–October — Great Migration peak, prime season

November — Short rains begin, quiet, great value

December — Shoulder season, good rates, active wildlife

Marlene's Tip

"Everyone wants the Migration — and it's extraordinary. But my most magical Kenya trips have been in January during calving season. The camps are half full, the predator activity is relentless, and you have the whole Mara to yourself." — Marlene Azeez
